I’ve spent my life making connections and it seems to have been the key to my opportunities and blessings. I’ve learned that human—and sometimes animal—connections can get one far in life. An early life mentor taught me that in order to reach people, you must have a relationship or connection with them. He sure was right.
But building a good relationship and ultimately reaching others takes effort. In my experience, there are two key ways to connect with people—by showing them that they are cared for and important, and by injecting a little humor into their lives. Combine these two into your personal or professional life, and the sky is the limit.
People can feel when they are cared for and have been made a priority, and one never knows the effect that can have. This was very evident once during my early years as a SeaWorld whale trainer. One day, another employee asked if she could take a look at a whale up close. I brought her poolside and introduced her to Martha, a beluga whale.
After a few minutes I bid farewell and thought nothing of the encounter. At the end of the day, however, I discovered that it was a bigger deal than I thought. I received a five-page note from this employee telling me that the simple act of connecting with Martha (and me) was the highlight of her month. It was a pivotal moment for me: I learned that life was not about me. It’s about others. By connecting with others, establishing a relationship and helping them find happiness, we can leave a lasting impression and make an impact.
Texas touchpoint
Connecting through humor is another powerful tool. People love to laugh and smile, so as a professional emcee I enjoy starting off an event by lightening up the room. Living in Texas, I’ve learned that if you want to spark the interest of a bunch of Texans, or visitors to Texas, start out by wearing a cowboy hat and singing, “The stars at night, are big and bright…” You’re guaranteed to get a smile and a laugh.
Or, sometimes, I start the presentation by walking up to the platform from the back of the house, greeting people, getting someone to do a quick dance during the walk-in music or complimenting the other bald men on their perfect haircuts—something fun that makes people want to learn more about what you have to say. And isn’t that what we want when we talk with people? Isn’t the goal of having a conference, a meeting, a sales pitch or a speech to reach people, to connect?
Everyone, no matter what industry they are in, can do this. If I can make connections with things as random as a beluga whale and a silly song, you can find a way too. So go out and connect with others by creating genuine relationships. Spread your message using humor. Impact others using your God-given gifts. You’ll find that it’ll bring you joy and success both personally and professionally.
